Guided Forest Walks
Walk into Lutoboka Central Forest Reserve, right at our boundary, with a local guide: birdsong, monkeys and quiet evergreen forest.
Our exclusive island tours take you to see, visit and learn about Kalangala’s places of interest and cultural sites with a local guide. Stops include the John Speke monument, Banga crab bay, the island’s palm oil plantations and different fishing communities.
Kalangala district is made up of 84 islands, and many have cultural significance that is little known to the wider world. In Buganda culture, one of the main sub-clans of the monkey (nkima) clan, headed by Ssemuggala, is based on Bugala Island. Kalaya cave is believed to have been founded by Ssemuggala and to be the origin of more than 50 Buganda clans.
Of the 84 islands in the district, many have cultural significance. Bubeke Island, for example, is home to the sacred Wanema’s shrine, visited by people seeking healing and fortune.
To make the most of your tour, we recommend a visit to the Sinyaland Museum in Kalangala Town Council, which tells the history of the Ssese Islands and the location of its sacred sites.
UGX 150,000 (about US$42) for up to 4 people. The tour takes about 2–3 hours and is a great time for photos.
